Abstract

This paper is a proposal of the low-profile UWB antenna, which is equipped with
the built-in filtering property, suitable in the high-data-rate wireless communication
systems. The key aim is to achieve a planar antenna with compact size and offer a wide
band of impedance and also be able to efficiently intercept narrowband interference
without using the external RF-filtering devices. The offered antenna will work in the
UWB frequency range at 3.1-10.6 GHz, and it introduces an internal band-rejection
solution to the issue of co-classifying narrowband wireless networks and systems. The
assembly of a resonant slot on the radiating element and a defected ground structure
(DGS) on a single-layered substrate made of FR-4 turns out to provide the compact
and low-profile structure. Design antenna is optimized systematically through full-wave
electromagnetic simulation, and then developed and tested. There are good agreement
between simulated and measured results demonstrating wide impedance bandwidth,
sharp band-rejection characteristics, constant radiation patterns throughout the
passband, acceptable realized gain, as well as high radiation efficiency. The filtering
structure successfully extends the notch frequency but leaves the antenna performance
of ultra-wideband performance unharmed. By removing external filters the system
complexity, size and loss of insertion are significantly reduced thus making the design
proposed perfectly suited to small wireless applications. Due to its low profile design,
planar design, and good filtering, the proposed antenna makes it a good candidate in
the short-range high-data-rate UWB communication systems, wireless personal area
networks (WPANs), and handheld wireless gadgets.
